Key Tips from our Production Managers for Managing Remote Teams

When you have teams based around the world working on a variety of different projects, you learn lots about how to manage remotely so that everyone feels trusted and as though they have the support they need to get the results. To find out the best way to do so, we asked some of our managers in the W4U team to share with us some of their favorite tips for managing remote teams. 

At Wings4U, we #workanywhere, we work passionately and having experts and artists across the globe is only making us stronger. Our team might be virtual, but the connection is real and all we have to do is just think outside the box to create our culture. As the year wraps up, we asked our team members to share their #virtualculture motto for 2017 in hope that they inspire you and your remote team members!

Remote work, from my experience, means: better focus, higher productivity and a lot of learning every day! So for managing remote teams it is crucial to clearly define tasks, roles and responsibilities, to have high quality communication (Q&A sessions, small talk, summaries of meetings and requests, briefs and debriefs etc.) and to use different collaboration tools!!!

Communication is key: make sure you are all on the same page, and that everyone in the team understands the objective and goals of the project. And it's important to make sure that anyone can ask questions to clarify points, especially if something seems unclear. You can make use of tools that will help the team understand; such as screen sharing visuals if you are talking to designers, etc.

Transparency: about the expectations, the context, times, what's at stake. I find it effective when the entire team understand the why. Needless to say, transparency and communication go hand in hand. This applies to everything, not only the projects at hand. It also applies to communication styles, boundaries, preferences of the team members.

Make sure everyone understands the scope and delivery timeline - so TALK (remind, and follow up if necessary). And be human, we all have lives besides the job, so things happen. Keep one place for info sharing - this makes your work more efficient and faster.

Clear roles and responsibilities with one owner/lead of the project. Clear outputs from each call/online meeting: action items, deadlines ideally captured in shared document. Video calls!!! Not only audio

It's important to make everyone to understand what they're working towards by showing the bigger picture, setting up right goals, milestones and priorities instead of just 'giving tasks'. It's also about having the processes and tools set up so it can help everyone to stay updated with the progress of the projects and enables to plan everyone's time better. This is valid for every company but I think especially with 100% remote company and teams having right processes and tools in place is quite meaningful.
